Home Care for Rheumatoid Arthritis UK
Arthritis is classified into many types. But what stays the same in all classes is that the patient has compromised mobility of joints, extreme pain, associated health issues, and regular doctor appointments. An arthritis patient needs a person who accompanies him 24/7 for his basic life maintenance needs.
What is Arthritis?
Arthritis is a pathology of the joints. It can be rheumatoid arthritis, which is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system of the body attacks its healthy tissue. It results in the inflamed lining of the joints of the body such as knees, hips, wrists, hands, and feet. What makes it worse is that it is a progressive disease that eventually engulfs all the systems of the body. That’s why it is called a ‘systemic disease.’ Education and awareness of the patient and people looking after him are crucial in managing the disease and relieving the painful signs and symptoms.
The other type of arthritis which is very common in the UK is osteoarthritis. It is characterized by the wearing down of the protective cartilage that lines a synovial joint. In this case, too, we can only manage the signs and symptoms and slow down the appearance of consequences with age. NSAIDs are used for relieving pain, movement therapies are employed for joint mobility, and braces and assistive devices are used for a better lifestyle of the patient.
Why does an Arthritis Patient need live-in Care?
You can see that an old member with arthritis has obvious difficulty in carrying out the basic needs of life, such as dressing, bathing, preparing meals, sometimes even toileting. And then, there are frequent health complications such as fever, fatigue, weakness, and weight loss. There should be an escort with sufficient knowledge of the disease who can manage the patient well day and night. They cannot be left alone in the house, and sending them away in the company of strangers in a care home seems not fair either.

What happens in a joint affected by rheumatoid arthritis?
Live-in care is a popular form of elderly care that provides seniors with the assistance they need to maintain their independence while living in the comfort of their own homes. If you are considering live-in care for yourself or a loved one, it's important to evaluate your needs and determine whether it's the right choice. By considering factors such as physical needs, emotional needs, safety needs, and financial needs, you can make an informed decision and ensure that you receive the care and support you need.
What is Rheumatoid Arthritis?
RA is an autoimmune disease that occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the synovial membrane, a thin layer of tissue that lines the joints. The synovial membrane produces synovial fluid, which lubricates the joints and allows for smooth movement. When the synovial membrane is damaged, it releases chemicals that cause inflammation, leading to swelling, pain, and stiffness in the affected joint.
Over time, the inflammation can cause damage to the cartilage, bone, and other tissues in the joint, leading to deformities and loss of function. RA can also affect other organs in the body, including the lungs, heart, and eyes.
Symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis
The symptoms of RA can vary from person to person, but some common symptoms include:
- Joint pain and stiffness that is worse in the morning or after periods of inactivity
- Swelling and redness in the affected joints
- Warmth in the affected joints
- Fatigue
- Loss of appetite
- Low-grade fever
- Nodules, which are firm lumps that develop under the skin near affected joints
- How RA Affects the Joints
RA can affect any joint in the body, but it most commonly affects the small joints of the hands, wrists, and feet. In the early stages of the disease, the inflammation is usually confined to one or a few joints, but as the disease progresses, it can affect multiple joints.
Inflammation in the synovial membrane can cause it to thicken and produce more synovial fluid, leading to swelling in the affected joint. This swelling can cause the joint to feel warm and tender to the touch.
As the inflammation persists, it can cause damage to the cartilage and bone in the joint. The cartilage is a smooth, elastic tissue that covers the ends of bones and allows them to move against each other without rubbing together. When the cartilage is damaged, the bones can rub against each other, causing pain and further damage.
Over time, the inflammation can also cause the bones in the joint to erode and deform. This can lead to permanent damage and loss of function in the affected joint.
